Westeros.org: Why Dany is THE WORST. (tw: victim blaming, child abuse)
While I watched the scene where Viserys is killed on HBO last week, I found myself feeling ill. Dany just watches as her brother, her last living relative who has spent his whole life caring for her, killed my savages because of a drunken threat. This reminded me how I could never truly like Danaerys, let alone Drogo. A couple days later, I was rereading Clash and came across this quote which made my stomach turn.
While describing how to name her dragons, she tells Jorah “Viserys was cruel and weak and frightened, yet he was my brother still. His dragon will do what he could not.”
Weak? Frightened? Who are you, Danaerys? Who were you a few months ago? What did you do when Viserys tried to restore your family to greatness? You cried like a little girl and wanted to go home. What did you do on your wedding night? You sat in fear instead of facing your troubles like a woman. If Viserys is so weak, why did you let him touch you? Why did you follow his every word? If you were a strong woman and thought this, you’d carve out your own path in life.
And then you marry a savage, and all of the sudden you’re all high and mighty. You’re the Khaleesi, better than your poor brother who is legal heir to the throne. Dany swells with pride after she becomes a horse lord’s whore, even though she has done nothing of merit in her life, and she would not even be in the position if not for Viserys or Illyrio, who she never thanks once. If she is no longer weak and frightened, it is only because she fell into thousands of savages that mindlessly worship who she is because of her husband. And then you watch as your husband, a murdering, pillaging, raping savage, prepare to kill your last brother in a brutal and painful way, the brother you would not be here if not for, and she does nothing. She does not request he is imprisoned, or sent back to Illyrio. She simply watches.
And then after he is dead, she brags to Jorah about her pathetic brother, while she has exhibited many times those qualities. This quote is more disillusioned and egocentric than anything characters like Jaime or Theon has ever said. And this is why I can’t even respect Danaerys.
A drunken threat…against her and her unborn child. One that he’d made before. And it’s not like he’d ever physically assaulted her before. Nope. Or that he knowingly broke the law of Vaes Dothrak. Nah, just a drunken threat. Viserys may not have deserved to die like he did, but please don’t reduce him holding a sword to her pregnant stomach as “a drunken threat”.
She cried like a little girl because she was a little girl. And why did she let Viserys touch her? Because he was bigger, because fighting back got her hurt WORSE. Kindly gtfo and stop victim blaming.
Nice touch with “whore.” Yes, because marrying someone makes you a whore. Fuck off.
And that last? I’m not even touching that one, it’s just FUNNY.
No. No no no no no. No. No, you know what? This was it. Despite my many qualms with the way Dany handles certain things in the last two books or so, I am now and forever a Dany fan, a Dany supporter and I fucking HOPE she gets the throne she’s the rightful heir to. Because this bullshit is TOO FUCKING MUCH.
I will still sigh and go “Oh, Dany” when I don’t understand why she made a decision, but I will do it WITH CONTEXT IN MIND as I always have. And I will support her until the end of the series, or until she dies, or until GRRM dies and leaves the series incomplete.
I’m one of Dany’s now. And this victim blaming bullshit can fuck off as well as the people who spew it. It’s literally too fucking much, it’s like you’re the dumbest person in existence, with a complete lack of reading comprehension, context comprehension or any sort of compassion and sympathy and fucking proud as hell of it. Ignorance is nothing to be proud of.
